Alexandra Van der Geer

PhD, MSc

Alexandra Van der Geer graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine and a degree in indology from Utrecht University , the Netherlands . She continued the first study, which resulted in a MSc. As a continuation of the second study, she took a PhD at Leiden University , the Netherlands . Meanwhile she conducted several palaeontological and archaeological excavations in Italy , France , and Greece . Her work at excavations included not only excavating in the narrow sense, but also mapping, measuring, setting up quadrant systems, cleaning, numbering and determining fossil finds, packing and later working on the data. She joined the Kern Institute of Leiden University as scientific assistant in digitizing field photographs from historical excavations. At the International Institute for Asian Studies she worked on a post-doctoral project on the depiction of animals in Asian archaeological objects. She is editor-in-chief of Cranium, a Dutch journal on paleontology. Alexandra continues her palaeontological research, specialising in the evolution of mammals on islands.
